Morning Come Through (David Stockdale)

Morning arise!
Don’t just stand there looking on
Fill in the shadow, colour this dawn
Cast a light eye on the lazy and the meek
Help them to fly
Give them reason to speak
Sometimes, the night is long
When dreams are fitful ‘cause things go wrong
Show us that we can belong
I want to shout out your new song
Don’t just stand there looking on

Morning, do
Morning, you
Morning come through

Morning arise!
We are rested and awake
Ready for light, nothing at stake
No longer bound by the night’s shadowy veil
Wake and resound
Time for another tale
Ooo! the gentle breeze
Fresh new sky, cool hand over me
Please do not delay
Morning, turn this night to day
Don’t just stand there that way

Morning, do
Morning, you
Morning come through

Third Half (David Stockdale)

Oh! fingers crossed and that’s no lie
So mixed up, lost; did I
Do something very wrong?
Suddenly I don’t belong
When she’s talking on the phone
As if I wasn’t home
I wonder what’s to laugh
When’s the third half?

Oh! put my guard down and that is when
Woh! she got hard, started driftin'
A little by surprise
I was sailing stormy skies
When they told me her new friend
And she were off for the weekend
And not on my behalf
When’s the third half?

You know I still believe in you
Don’t want to doubt but what to do?
I thought about talking it through
But wrong or right, looks like I lose

When she’s out most every night
And her friends say it’s all right
Fancy or photograph?
When’s the third half?

I wonder what’s to laugh
Is it on my behalf?
Fancy or photograph?
When’s the third half?

Potato Pizza (David Stockdale)

Some people don’t know what to do
Can’t stand always eating the same food
Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Thai: so much to choose
But I’ve got one thing and I’m always in the mood

Breakfast time, snack time, early lunch
You can bet this man’s gonna eat a bunch
I can never have too much of that luscious stuff
And as I get older, I just can’t get enough

Supper on the road, at home, any doggone way
My head just reels, hearing,
“Is that to go or to stay?”

Oh! give it to me hot, thick and round
Lumpy on the top and underneath brown
There’s nothing quite like it, anytime
My potato pizza is so sublime

Supper on the road, at home, any doggone way
My head just reels, thinking,
“Is that to go or to stay?”

Some people think I am strange
I can understand the fact you want to change
But I got something better and it gives me a thrill

My potato pizza, and it always will
My potato pizza, got to have my fill
My potato pizza, yours truly still!

4.

Untie (David Stockdale)

Got to untie
Whatever keeps it shut
Have to rely
Ain’t no blame, ain’t no shame in giving it up
We can sit and watch or react
Turn notion into fact
It’ll be all right
Face those fears or wait
Nothing to lose unless we hesitate
Untie

Got to untie
Whatever holds it down
Have to find
Something to say, a better way around
How can you swallow all of this weight?
So much ignorance and hate
Time to move on
Tighten up or unwind
Unless we search, we’ll never find
Untie

When it’s a tragedy or worse
A missing key, secret or curse
That foolish need, this awful thirst
Untie

Got to untie, let it fly
Untie, let it fly
Yeah, let it fly

Untie, let it fly…

5.

Take (David Stockdale)

Take these eyes, unyielding
All this senseless pride
Calloused hands and feelings
Make them yours tonight
Yes, make them yours tonight

Take this past, unruly
Every damn false start
Take these arms and truly
Wrap them round your heart

Take this ride
Be my guide
If you like

Take my foolish laughter
All these long, lost dreams
Wake this drunken actor
Take it to extremes
Please take it to extremes

My senses delight in you
Take this nose, these flaws
Worn-out clothes and nights of blue
Show me there’s still cause

Here, now, without claws
No delay, no pause
Underneath it all
Show me there’s still cause
Show me there’s still cause

Rain Washing Us (David Stockdale)

As the thunder sounds
She goes out to sit
Wind in her clothes and her hair
There is danger now
The wonder of it
She isn’t scared

Whirling down this lonely avenue
Rainfall, take away the dust
Pouring, drown this stubborn attitude
Rain washing us

The storm closes in
Stronger and swelling
She focuses on the sound
It’s an ancient psalm
Of primordial telling
Smell of the ground

Whirling down this lonely avenue
Rainfall, take away the crust
Pouring, drown this stubborn attitude
Rain washing us

Raindrops on the roof
Restless pounding
Water flowing through
Gutters and trees
Torrent in the street
All-surrounding
Pouring from the sky, racing to the…
Pouring from the sky, racing to the sea

A Friend (David Stockdale)

I asked around about your favourite food
The kind of music you listen to
Behind the piano I hadn’t cleaned since June
There on a napkin
A few words for you

You’re finally here and I sit tight
Nothing’s clear, sometimes that’s right
Burning for your love tonight
But you just want a friend

The first time I saw you, I was broken and blind
Figured you would never pay me any mind
Then I had a dream and it changed my style
Decided to clean up my act for a while

Now you’re here and high above
And I am near to you, sort of
Burning for your love
But you just want a friend

I can see that you’ve been played
Was he out of line, did he misbehave?
But that isn’t me, can’t you see
Please stay
Don’t go away

You just want a friend
Well, it’s not the end
But you just want a friend

8.

Rock and LOL (David Stockdale)

I went to the doctor
My eyes were cherry red
He took one look at me
And shook his wrinkled head
Said, “Nothing to do for you and nowhere to go”
50 bucks to listen to what I already know
Throw some more coal on that
Classic Rock and LOL

I called up my agent
To find something to do
How else to pay the rent
And play my music too?
She said, “I’ve got a gig for you down at the Water Hole
Only thing you’ll have to do is show some self control.”
Tories in lorries and that
Classic Rock and LOL

I’ve seen leaders fall
Call girls call
Diplomat who swore and spat
Rich man greedy, poor man sore
Shipwrecked captain ashore

Looked for an answer
Anywhere I could
Drank and laid my way
It didn’t do much good
Slaved and made a vow to help my closest friends
That’s when the trouble started and where my story ends
A hankering for soul but I got
Classic Rock and LOL

Mouth Like Jeanne Moreau (David Stockdale)

It slipped away
Like a cat in the night
Was it on a train
Or an overseas flight?
Who was to blame?
Was it fate or choice?
Don’t know her name
Can’t hear her voice

Where was she from? I don’t know
I just recall she had a
Mouth like Jeanne Moreau

How did she look?
What did she wear?
Who gave, who took?
Were we both fair?
Who made the moves?
Where did we meet?
What did we prove?
Were we discrete?

What colour eyes? I don’t know
I just remember she had a
Mouth like Jeanne Moreau

Ooo yes, did she look away
When I brushed her knee?
Ooo yes, did she cross her legs
Then look back at me
And smile, so sweet and slow?
I kissed her ever urging
Mouth like Jeanne Moreau

10.

Call Me Fool (David Stockdale)

Oh when it’s time for our good-byes
We don’t know how to act
I’d much prefer not to say a word
Slip out the back
Find a ploy to avoid
Saying these things to you
You understand; it’s something that
We don’t want to do

Call me fool, call me fool

Awkward dance, away we glance
This is just a mess
Now face to face, we embrace
Saying something meaningless
I start away then turn to say
Good-bye, simple and true
But you don’t see and that’s fine with me
There’s nothing more to do

Call me fool, call me fool

Say I’m just a damn fool
There’s nothing ‘bout it I’m gonna do
Say I haven’t got a clue
The more I grow, the less I assume

Moon lit eyes and sheep filled skies
Outside the airport glass
They’re gods up there making me aware
Of how quickly time can pass
How strange the change as thunder rolls
And rivers fast un-do
The oceans churn and seasons turn
We are turning, too

Call me fool, call me fool

11.

Ride Tonight (David Stockdale)

She went into town, had herself a look around
There was nothing up, only buildings coming down
So different now and the time was right
To ride, oh you better ride tonight
Go, you better ride tonight
Oh, you better ride tonight
Ride tonight

She’d landed a good job at the Buy ‘n Save
Hustling and taking home what they gave
A happy slave; now this sorry sight
She’s gonna ride
Oh, you better ride tonight
Go, you better ride tonight
Oh, you better ride tonight

Her dad’s dad had come there from the South
Body lean and hungry mouth
Gentle soul with a giant grin
Big man’s dreams, the will to win
Built a job, a home and a family
Now it’s all come down
And she’s free

She went into town, thought about her mom and dad
Reevaluated what she was and what she had
And it wasn’t bad, but the time was right
To ride, oh you better ride tonight
Go, you better ride tonight
Oh, you better ride tonight
Ride tonight, ride tonight
