HOTEL HEMINGWAY (David Stockdale)

Got a cow lick; big, thick specs
Black suit that smells of cheap cigarettes
One eye gone, the other swift
Sips cold coffee on the graveyard shift

Always nice to hookers and to cops
He stashes the cash away
In a coffee can behind pans and pots
He’s gonna quit someday
At the Hotel Hemingway

She’s got wings on her shoulders
But they grow only at night
There ain’t no one can hold her
She lives fast by the pale moonlight

She can walk nine miles in high heeled shoes
Never complains or pays
Got tight little jeans, watch how she moves
When she asks if you’ve stayed
At the Hotel Hemingway

Hot night, the rookie’s smashed, crashes into L.A.
Got a wallet full of holes and a head to match
Wishes that he could stay
At the Hotel Hemingway

No bedbugs there, just good human care!

THIS OLD TRAIN (David Stockdale)

She’s got a penchant for guns and knives
He’s peace and love, puns and jive
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground

She is shy, he likes to make a fuss
She drives a car, he takes the bus
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground

Now how can he stand it?
And what did she take to heart?
A princess, a bandit; a gentleman, a tart

Well, she likes to lie in pyjamas under quilts
He sleeps naked in sheets of silk
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground

Now how does he stand her
And what did she see in him?
A fox and a gander; a habit and a whim

Well he digs that Auf der Jagd played in reverse
She’s wondering how to pad her purse
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground
They’re gonna ride this old train into the ground

Ma va a quel paese!

BALLAD OF ERICK (Joseph G. Stockdale III)

Hold our baby, Erick, pretend that he's your own
And Brenda here's your pretty wife and this your humble home.
There ain't no need for modesty in the middle of a war,
When time is short, the end is near and the army's at the door.

Well, damn those politicians, crooked authority,
For putting a man like you into such awful jeopardy,
For filling the Nantahala with the helicopter's din,
For turning the Junaluska Road into the Ho Chi Minh.

The FBI has put put you on its most-wanted list,
They say you are a demon, cop-killer and terrorist;
They say you are the devil but from what I can see,
You ain't no terrorist, you look like Jesus Christ to me.

The FBI thinks we’re so poor we don't know what's a sin,
Well, they can keep their Judas reward, we ain't turnin' you in,
We ain't tellin' 'em where you're goin',
Where you are or where you've been,
The Bureau of Abortionists ain't never goin' to win.

Like you I know these mountains, they are our history,
And God saw fit to make 'em rugged, wild and free.
The hunter don't always get the bear, the logger the tree,
And that's the way that God intended it to be.

Go to your mountain cavern, through the laurel slicks and hells,
To a ridge that runs to freedom, not to no damn jail cell!
And when the seed you leave us begins to grow and swell,
We'll lift our eyes unto the Lord, and pray you're safe and well.

If he's a boy, we'll call him Ben, if she's a girl, Ruth
And when your child comes of age, we'll tell him or her the truth,
How her Daddy was an outlaw, how his Pa was a Christian man;
Defied the federal government in this church that is our land.

EASY WAY OUT (David Stockdale)

There are pills for your ills, pretty potions to relieve
They put up road blocks with tough cops
To fight alcohol and speed
Got to feed the illusion, doctors running all about
You can find a solution or take the easy way out

She can cook, clean and buy, keep him home till 35
Lie, cheat and spy, anything to save his life
From this pain and confusion
That ugly, brutal lout!
You can find a solution or take the easy way out

They got lanes for the strange
Where they tell you not to go
Why not give them a place where
They can come in from the cold
Practice what you preach, Hun!
Your morality’s in doubt
You can find a solution or take the easy way out

Got to go the right road, not the easy way out
Got to go the right road, not the easy way out

5.

WORKING ON LOVE (David Stockdale)

Got to work on love if it’s going to last
It don’t come from above
Ain’t no spell that’s been cast
If you harvest one, you’ve sown thirty-five
And you never know if it will or won’t survive

Unless you work on love to make it right
Come on, come on and work on love
Day and night

Can I hear you testify
How long we been on, you and I?
How many times have we left behind
Our foolish pride?

Got to work it out
Nothing good is easy
Trouble hanging round
Gonna make us strong or tear us down
I believe in love with all the distraction
It takes a firm belief but we can make it happen

If we work on love with all our might
Come on, come on and work on love
We can make it right

Even through the darkest night
How long we been on, shining light
Casting shadows where cold winds bite
We hold on tight

Working on love!  Come on and work on love!

DAMN THING BEHIND (David Stockdale)

She winced at the border guards, the drug dogs danced by
It wasn’t what was in her bag
It was what weighed on her mind
Twenty grams of daddy gone, a kilo of beguiled
A dime bag of memories
When the West was just a child
Nothing like freedom to blow a soul away
And it’s better than kneeling till your dying day

Forgive, forget and unwind
Leave the whole damn thing behind

His eyes were upon her, she moved on to the next car
Not for contempt or bother
It was just a muddled heart
A moment of reflection, the unsettling kind
She looked back over her shoulder just one last time
All those good intentions shot to the sun
And it really didn’t matter
What was done was done

So forgive, forget and unwind
Leave the whole damn thing behind
She’s gonna forgive, forget and unwind
Leave the whole damn thing behind

She winced at the border guards
Suspicious, they looked on
It wasn’t what was in her bag
It was what she knew was gone
Now she’s moving on

7.

PARADOX (David Stockdale)

You’re dynamite but you don’t blow
Wrong is right in this day for night
So hurry up and take it slow
No good love without a fight
It’s just a paradox, there’s no doubt
Paradox is what it’s all about

Bombs for peace, love conditioned ties
Lots of money to keep them poor
History to repeat the lies
Power to the village fool
It’s just a paradox, there’s no doubt
Paradox is what it’s all about

Already wet where it rains
Something familiar looks so strange
To stay the same, everything must change
It’s just a paradox

One hand clap, Navajo
If all that’s left is right
Then is it right or left we go?
Love thyself, not too much
It’s just a paradox, there’s no doubt
Paradox is what it’s all about

RIDING INTO A STORM (David Stockdale)

Dark clouds hanging overhead
Flash of lightning, touch of red
In the rear view mirror, a horizon line
Clear as a highway sign
Faster now, surging forward into a blustery sky

Drops of water coming down
Beating slowly, drumming sound
Quicker the rhythm as I rush on
Pedal pressed to the ground
Just ahead, turbulent the form
Riding into a storm, riding into a storm

Tempest raging, I have no fear
Happy just to be down here
Oh! the power, light and roar
Wanting all and nothing more
Riding into a storm

9.

HEAD BOWED DOWN (David Stockdale)

The ocean motionless, no sound
A giant with head bowed down
No waves up on the shore tonight
And there’s a tear in the dolphin’s eye

You were stung by some Judah ray
Stabbed through the heart
Because you were not afraid
Was it mistrust or just your fate that took you away?

And I have to wonder why
Why by the hands of those they love do the good die?
The ones like you so hard to find
People who give us light

Is it “luckier” where you are now?
You will be missed but we persist somehow
All the battle worn, the down and out
They stand their ground

There you are in the eyes of kids
Looking in wonder at what nature gives
Running fast along broken path as they laugh

Did you doubt or ever feel used?
It must have hurt to see the Earth so abused
Was it your disregard of the bad news
That got your message through?

I see you in the eyes of kids
Looking in wonder at what nature gives
Running fast along broken path as they laugh

10.

NEW POV (David Stockdale)

She complains about the rain and her sanity
He says to think about it like a trip down to the sea
That’s what she likes, his crazy POV

Writer blocks, he can’t find that rhyming scheme
She says it’s just a paradox, the rhyme will set you free
That’s what he likes about her, a different POV

Laughing’s fine for some; clowning, crying, too
Bellyaching can be fun
But I want a different point of view

Thick head, hard skin, so much out, so little in
See that grin of cow, take that funny spoon out

They’re alive and it’s a die-hard mutiny
He says forget the guns; a guitar is what we need
They don’t agree but appreciate his POV

Laughing’s great indeed; seduction suits just fine
Intellectual pot-pourri
But I need a different place of mind

She complains about the rain and her sanity
He says to think about it like a trip down to the sea
It’s just so nice, that crazy POV
Come on, feel free to have a fresh cool POV
You might not agree but it’s a brand new POV

Selon moi, il a besoin de lunettes!

11.

ON DIT (David Stockdale)

engendrent d’autres violences
Il faut lever la séance
fermer la macabre danse
